Quakers Struggle in Non-League Weekend

The Quakers struggled this weekend as they couldn’t find a way to get past two good ACCHL opponents in Rowan University and Delaware.

Friday night the Quakers welcomed in Rowan for the first game of a two game set against them over the next two weeks. Getting the start in net for Penn was Sophomore goaltender Reagan O’Neil. Wasting no time the Quakers got on the board early with a goal less than two minutes into the period by Sophomore Chris Bugliosi put the team up 1-0 early in the contest. Unfortunately for the Quakers that is where the good news stops. Rowan managed to score three unanswered goals in the period to put them ahead 3-1 going into the break. Showing some resilience once again the team came out of the locker room with urgency finding the back of the net quickly. Captain AJ Moshyedi scoring the goal 90 seconds into the period cutting the lead to two. Rowan wasn’t going to let the Quakers come back that easily find the net again twice more in the second to move the score to 5-1. Bugliosi once again putting the team on his back scoring the second goal of the period for Penn where it would stay for the conclusion of the period for a score of 5-2. This back and forth would continue into the 3rd period. The Quakers found the back of the net again thanks to a power play goal from Senior Axel D’Amelio again cutting the lead to two it was Rowan once again adding two more goals with Penn chasing to catch up. The team would add one more goal from Graduate Student Yongwoo Park but in the end it wasn’t enough. After a full 60 minutes the Quakers would fall to Rowan by a score of 7-5. Both teams peppering the goaltenders with shots; Rowan with 52 and Penn with 50 respectively.

The team was back at it again the follow day with a trip down to University of Delaware in an effort to even out the weekend. Starting in net for the Quakers was Junior goaltender Jack Averill. Saturday’s game had a unique twist to it as the game was played on an Olympic ice rink which is 15 feet wider than a standard ice surface. This meant there was more room for each team to use but also meant that was more room to skate which didn’t line up well for a Quakers team coming off a hard fought game the evening before. Penn held their own in the first period only allowing one goal from Blue Hens. However things started to head down hill early in the second period with Delaware finding the back of the net three times in the first 10 minutes of the period putting the Quakers further behind quickly in the second. The team struggled to get shots on goal with the Blue Hens doing an excellent job of blocking shots, keeping the Quakers from having many scoring opportunities. Bugliosi managed to put one in for the Quakers in the 3rd but the scoring continued for Delaware putting this game far out of reach. Final score of the game was 7-1 after 60 minutes of play.

After talking with Coach Artosky he admitted that this weekend isn’t what he wanted but stressed that playing good opponents helps make the team better and shows what it will take to successful through the season.

The Quakers will host Georgetown on Friday night (10/25) at 7:15 PM at the Class of 1923 Arena and then get another crack at Rowan on the road Saturday (10/26) at Hollydell Ice Rink. Come out and support the team as they look to get back in the win column. We look forward to seeing you there. Go Quakers!
